BANDY CREEK CAMPGROUND
Big South Fork National Recreation Area
Oneida, Tennessee - July, 2009
I have wanted to camp at Bandy Creek since my first drive through back in December (2008). The campground, part of the Big South Fork National Recreation Area.. was suggested to me by a friend at work. He and his wife have camped at Bandy several times and really give the CG high marks. Now I understand why.
I enjoyed a couple of days at Bandy Creek.. and I'm already planning a trip back. My site (6-C) was near perfect. Plenty of room for the Jayco and my pick-up. The site also offered a huge gravel area with a pic nic table, fire ring with grill and a lantern hook. The roads and site driveways are paved.. making for great bike riding around the CG.. and pretty level site set up. I actually only had to level from front to back.. side to side needed no adjustment.
On the second day I drove to Stearns, KY (about 40 minutes from Bandy) and road the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. Stearns is a neat little town. The train travels from Stearns to the historic Blue Heron Mining Camp. Very enjoyable ride. Round trip, including a stop to explore Blue Heron.. takes about three hours.
My camping trip to Bandy Creek was too short to enjoy all the things close by. Bandy Creek and the Big South Fork park offer scenery galore.. dozens of hiking trails.. canoeing and more.

*NOTE: The most popular route to Bandy Creek Campground involves driving down into the river gourge, and of course.. back up again. This can be a little challenging depending on your towing situation. Here are a couple of viideos showing some of the curves and the 13% grade.
